Where did the name “Sturgis” come from? Biscuits. Word has it they were really good too. Served to Governor Cass in 1830, they so impressed the leader that he suggested the town be named for their baker: Mrs. John Sturgis. Today, you can still get a biscuit near our hotel in Sturgis. Or you can visit the many antique stores and historical spots in our charming downtown. Amish country is nearby (be mindful of their horses and buggies while driving in St. Joe County). And just 10 miles from the Country Hearth Inn hotel in Sturgis-Lagrange Area, guests may visit the neighboring town of Colon, home to Abbott’s Magic Company. Colon holds the world’s largest magic convention every August. Lastly, our hotel in Sturgis is just 10 miles from the Shipshewana Flea Market, where you can visit more than 1,000 vendors-it’s a shopper’s paradise.
